S/S Nedjan

S/S Nedjan was a 64 meter long steamship built in Greenock, Scotland in 1893. The ship was built for the shipping company Well Park Steam Ship and was named Well Park. In 1904, the Swedish Ångfartygs AB Pallas bought her to Sweden and renamed her Pallas. In 1922, she was sold to Rederi AB Ostkusten and renamed Nedjan.

The ship was wrecked in a heavy storm on the night of January 9-10, 1954, with 17 men on board. In the last radio transmission between Nedjan and Härnösand’s coastal radio station, the captain says that the machinery cannot hold the ship, which is drifting with the storm. The ship lost steering and neither the rudder chain nor the emergency steering could be repaired, so she drifted uncontrollably towards the leafy shoals. When Härnösand’s radio tried to contact Nedjan later that night, there was no reply. The day after the sinking, an upturned lifeboat was found containing a deceased person.

Many people searched for Nedjan and it was not until July 13, 1996 that Nedjan was found. She lies on her right keel at a depth of 32 meters at Lövgrunds rabbar in the Gulf of Gävle, four miles north of Eggegrund and was almost completely intact when discovered. In the early years, many parts of the ship were lost through looting and in recent years she has broken up due to trawling. This is because the position was never entered on the chart.
